Battery energy storage is a young industry at utility scale, and the small number of well-publicised fire incidents at international BESS sites has rightly raised expectations on how safety is designed, managed and disclosed. The Otahuhu BESS Project has been engineered with safety as a first-order design constraint rather than an after-market overlay — and the project's safety posture is one of the reasons Resource Consent for the site was granted and remains unappealed.
